  • Reading
    • "Fundamentals of Grid Computing" by Victors Berstis, IBM.
      • This paper introduces some basic concepts of grip computing. Grid software comprise some key components: management software, donor software, submission software. To utilize a grid, several ways(scavenging, reservation, scheduling) or their combination can be employed.

  • Look through 10gen website, read documentation. Need a linux platform to run the SDK.
  • Reading
    • "The Open Grid Services Architecture: Where the Grid Meets the Web." Talia, D. Internet Computing, IEEE 6, no. 6 (2002): 67-71.
      • This paper introduces OGSA concepts and resources. It also makes a comparison with web services and gives OGSA implementation.
    • "The Physiology of the Grid: An Open Grid Services Architecture for Distributed Systems Integration." I. Foster, C. Kesselman, J. Nick, S. Tuecke, Open Grid Service Infrastructure WG, Global Grid Forum, June 22, 2002.

    • Install ubuntu8.0.4 on ppc.
    • Download 10gen software for Linux 32-bit. But when execute "./dbctrl start", system prompts "Syntax error, "(" unexpected".
  • 09/23
    • Install 10gen software on Mac OS X. It can run properly.
    • Problem analysis: From the dbctrl.sh, it seems like this 10gen linux-version only supports two kinds of CPU: i386 and amd, no ppc.

    • Download source code on Mac Ubuntu. But db cannot be built for no makefile for linux.ppc.

  • Prepare for the presentation to "The Physiology of the Grid".

  • Reading
    • "Semantic Web Services", Sheila A. McIlraith, Tran Cao Son, and Honglei Zeng, IEEE intelligent Systems, 2001.
    • "The Semantic Grid: Past, Present, and Future", David De Roure, Nicholas R. Jennings, and Nigel R. Shadbolt. Proceedings of the IEEE, VOL. 93, NO. 3, March 2005.
      • The paper outlines the requirements fo the Semantic Grid, their vision and research challeges to achieve the vision. Agent, Grid, Semantic Web Services, pervasive computing, sensor networks, what's the relationship among them?
  • Install Globus Toolkit on Mac OS X 10.3. However, GT4 requires Java1.5+, OS X10.3 support Java 1.4 at most.

• 10/13-10/17
  • Install Globus Toolkit 4.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.4
  • Config basic security on globus. There are errors when I installed SimpleCA. After creating CA Certificate, host certificate and user certificate, "grid-proxy-init -debug -verify" cannot run properly. It prompts that "Couldn't verify the authenticity of the user's credential to generate a proxy from".

  • Try to fix the error by assigning the machine a static IP. But I still failed to configure the security. I need both DNS name and static IP to configure. Without getting the certificates set properly, globus cannot run.
